Curtain Care in Dubai — How to Clean & Maintain Your Curtains
Curtains in Dubai accumulate desert dust faster than anywhere else in the world, and the intense UV exposure accelerates fabric degradation. With the right maintenance routine, quality curtains should last 7–15 years. With no maintenance, the same curtains can look faded and dusty within 2–3 years. This guide covers everything you need to know about curtain care in the UAE.
How Often Should You Clean Curtains in Dubai?
In Dubai's dusty environment, curtains accumulate significantly more particulate matter than in temperate climates. The recommended maintenance schedule:
- Monthly — gentle vacuuming with a soft brush attachment on all curtains
- Every 6 months — spot clean any stains; wipe the track with a damp cloth
- Annually — full wash or professional dry-clean depending on the fabric type
- After a sandstorm — always vacuum curtains within 24 hours of a significant dust event
Cleaning by Fabric Type
Sheer Curtains (Voile, Polyester Sheer)
Most sheer curtains in polyester voile are machine washable on a gentle, cold cycle. Use a laundry bag to prevent tangling. Do not tumble dry — hang immediately after washing to drip-dry, gently pulling the curtain to its original shape. Ironing on a low setting with steam restores crispness. Never use bleach on coloured sheers.
Blackout Curtains
Blackout curtains are more delicate than they appear — the triple-weave backing can delaminate if washed too aggressively. Check the care label: most of our blackout fabrics recommend a gentle machine wash at 30°C or professional dry-cleaning. Do NOT wring or spin at high speed — this damages the backing layer. Hang straight after washing.
Velvet Curtains
Velvet curtains should be dry-cleaned only — machine washing crushes the pile and destroys the velvet texture permanently. For regular maintenance, brush gently in the direction of the pile with a soft velvet brush. Steam lightly to lift the pile after any compression. Do not rub velvet dry with a cloth.
Linen Curtains
Linen curtains can be machine washed at 30–40°C (depending on the specific blend). Pure linen will shrink on first wash — our linen fabrics are pre-shrunk to eliminate this risk. Do not iron wet linen curtains that are still hanging — always remove them first. A slight natural crinkle in linen is normal and desirable; over-pressing removes the natural texture.
Silk Curtains
Silk curtains must be dry-cleaned professionally. Water damages the silk fibres and can leave permanent water marks. For regular maintenance, very gently vacuum with the lowest suction setting and a clean, soft upholstery attachment. Keep silk curtains away from direct water sources.
Dubai-Specific Care Tips
- Close curtains during sandstorms — open windows during a sandstorm allows fine dust particles to embed deep into curtain fibres
- Avoid damp mopping near curtains — mopping floor near curtains in humid conditions can transfer moisture into the lower panels, promoting mildew in natural fabrics
- Keep air conditioning drainage clear — AC units that drip can wet the curtain fabric at the base of patio door curtains, causing mildew and staining
- Rotate curtains seasonally — if one panel receives significantly more direct sunlight than the other (e.g. one side of a bay window), swap the panels every 12 months to even out UV exposure and fading
When to Replace Curtains in Dubai
Signs that curtains need replacing rather than cleaning:
- Fading or colour change on the sunlit side (UV degradation) that cleaning cannot reverse
- Fabric thinning or holes appearing in areas of maximum sun exposure
- Backing layer delaminating from the face fabric on blackout curtains
- Mildew staining that has penetrated the fibres (surface mildew can usually be cleaned)
- Structural damage to the heading — torn eyelet holes, pulled-out pleat tapes
